The Narrator is the main character in The War of the Worlds novel, as well as several of its adaptations, although the role of the narrator and that of the protagonist are not always represented as the same person in these incarnations.
Life Before the Invasion[]
The Narrator was a middle class writer of philosophical papers. He was living in Surrey with his wife and a servant. The Narrator is a fan of astronomy, as is his friend Ogilvy. His brother was a medical student living in London at the time.
The Invasion[]
His journey began when a cylinder landed in Horsell Common, and the Martians within attacked the area killing, among others, his friend Ogilvy. Fleeing home he later took his wife to stay with her cousins in Leatherhead. However they he'd promised to return the cart they'd hired and so headed back down to Maybury Hill.
The Narrator sheltered in his house, hiding from the heat ray. When the Artilleryman entered his house, they drank together before continuing on to Leatherhead, where he hoped to meet his wife. The two were separated at the Weybridge Attack.
He later encountered the Curate. After the Curate's death (Knocked out by Narrator for being too loud and body taken by a Martian) He meets the Artilleryman again, who survived the Weybridge attack. The Artilleryman believes London can be rebuilt in the sewers. He is slightly mad, and the Narrator leaves him to his own devices. He then goes to London, where he discovers the Martians dead, slain by bacteria that their immune systems could not handle, as there is no bacteria on the planet Mars.
The Narrator is commonly shown as being analytical in the face of danger, keeping cool in situations of stress. However, he is unable to remain calm when his companion, the Curate begins raving and alerts the Martians, to which the Narrator strikes him, knocking him unconscious.
