The story takes place as George Herbert takes off from his house and suddenly sees something fall from the sky. He goes over to check it out and sees that it is a giant (around 50 foot tall) 6 legged alien machine that chases all the members of the neighbourhood into a forest. George hides but most of the people are killed.
Later, he finds a small house and goes inside. There, he meets an army man who helps him on part of his mission to find his family. But near the end, the army guy is killed by his leader for helping George and refusing to let him go with his leader.
- Closer to the end, George hasn't found his family and it is beginning to be dawn. He has lost hope and walks up to a martian. He sighs and says, "Go on. Go on. Kill me... KILL ME!" The martian falls to its knees and dies, as do the others. The viruses in the air on earth had killed them. Then, George's wife and son come running towards him and everyone is safe again.
