The Martian Scanning Machine, apparently also known as a Scanner, is a machine used by the Martians to scan the area for traps.

"The scanning machine has a very sensitive antenna array, which can detect concealed objects."
The Scanning Machines make a short pulsing sound. This is the sound of the frontal detection radars, located not far above the heat ray.
The machine represents a spider-like metallic vehicle designed specifically to notify nearby Martian units of human positions. Some Scanning Machines can be modified with a Black Smoke canister launcher, but this was never utilized by the Martians, as both Fighting and Scouting Machines already had this ability.
